The Ocean Ate My Glasses

The title pretty much says it all.  But since I have my own little space here on the internet to bitch about whatever it is I want, allow me to vent.

The ocean ate my fucking glasses.

Two days ago my dad, Braden, Casey and I headed to Carolina beach to take in some waves. The water was warm, the sun was shining, and I had this warm, fuzzy, oh, isn't this a beautiful day kind of feeling.

The waves were crashing close to the shore, so I decided to be daring and carry Braden out a bit deeper so we could glide over the waves like a slide right before they broke.  He loved it, I loved it, and I'm thinking, oh, this is just so invigorating, I am so glad I am alive and young and

BAM.

An unexpected wave comes and nearly knocks Braden and I over.  He thought it was funny, I was just relieved we were in one piece, and then I realized something.

I couldn't really see.

I knew what had happened, but I was in denial.  I touched my face to readjust my glasses.

They weren't there.

Just so you know, these aren't just your run of the mill sunglasses.  These are my prescription glasses with transition lenses and anti-reflective glare and no break no scratch blah blah blah. They were expensive.  And given that I generally don't make much of an effort on my appearance these days (aka, I'm too lazy to take the 60 seconds to put in my contacts in the morning), I wear these glasses ALL THE TIME.

And just like that, they were gone.

I frantically tried to find them, diving down, feeling around, yelling to those around me.  But come on, it was futile.  The ocean is big.  The waves were crashing.  And I couldn't see shit.

It was kind of a buzzkill.

We left the beach shortly thereafter.  My dad drove my car, since I COULDN'T SEE SHIT.

I came home, put on my contacts, and promptly called Lens Crafters.

And here is my major plug for Lens Crafters (who are not paying me at all to give this ringing endorsement).  Do you know what they did?  I told them the ocean ate my glasses, they looked up my records, they found the exact frames I had lost, and they made them, all without me having to leave the comforts of home.  An hour or so later, I went and picked them up.  And that was that.

And it only cost me $400!

Ugh.

  1. I feel you! My son stepped on my prescription sunglasses. It was so sad! They were pricey too. I've been wearing them with duct tape for the last three days!

  2. I am pretty much forcing Brian to get Lasik done next month. I'm so done with the contacts and glasses getting bent and broken. Obviously that isn't an option for everyone, but it will work for him and I am just so worried all the time about unexpected expenses like those. So our deal? He gets Lasik and I get laser hair removal. Oh yes, there will be lasers.

  3. This exact thing happened to John a couple of years ago! He didn't have a child with him but another kid bumped into him knocking off his glasses and left him blind for the rest of our vacation.
